    Comparative study of management of olecranon fractures using tension band wiring technique with cancellous screw and K wires

    Background: Olecranon fractures are commonly seen injuries in the emergency room. The surgical management of displaced fractures is open reduction and internal fixation with k-wires and figure of eight tension band wiring. It can also be fixed with intramedullary cancellous screw with tension band wiring. The present study is to compare the results of both the surgical procedures and to assess the merits and demerits.Methods: This prospective comparative study was carried out from August 2012 to November 2013 in Bapuji Hospital and Chigateri General Hospital attached to J.J.M Medical College, Davangere, India, where among 20 olecranon fractures, ten were treated with Tension band wiring with Kirshner wire and another ten treated with intramedullary cacellous screw with tension band wiring and the results were evaluated and compared.Results: In our study, most of the cases were type II B fractures according to Colton’s classification. According to Mayo elbow performance score, Excellent  results found  in 8  patients (80%), good in1patient (10%)  and fair in 1 patient (10%) in cancellous screw group and in K wire group, 5 patient (50%) had excellent, 3 patient (30%) had good  and 2 patients (20%) had fair results. No poor result was seen in both groups.Conclusions: From this study it is concluded that using cancellous screw with tension band wiring for displaced transverse and oblique olecranon fractures gives better clinical results when compared to tension band wiring with K-wire fixation avoiding cost, work time loss and possible complications from hard ware removal

    The ten group Robson classification: a retrospective study to identify strategies to optimise caesarean section rates

    Background: Caesarean section rates have been increasing worldwide. For proper assessment, the ten group Robson classification is recommended by WHO for assessing CS rates. We are analyzing the caesarean section rates by classifying the caesarean sections using modified Robson’s ten group classification. Objective of the current study was to estimate caesarean section rates in our hospital and to classify caesarean section using modified Robson’s ten group classification system.Methods: Current retrospective study was conducted in the department of obstetrics and gynaecology in a tertiary care hospital. The medical records were reviewed for a period of 12 months.Results: Total number of deliveries during the study period was 315. The total numbers of caesarean section were 159 and total vaginal deliveries were 156. The caesarean section rate was 50.47%. The main contributors to overall caesarean section rate were group 5 (18.10%), group 2 (13.96%) and group 1 (5.71%). Women with one previous LSCS contributed majorly to the caesarean section rate. Higher CS rate was also seen in both group 2A (69.40%) and group 4A (47.30%) which had underwent induction of labour. More inclination towards trial of labour following CS for women with previous one LSCS can lower CS rates.Conclusions: Modified Robson’s classification is easily implementable and an effective tool for ongoing surveillance. The results can be compared between Institutions, states and countries. Having implemented the Robson classification and identified groups which contributed the most to the overall CS rate, interventions to reduce the same has to be our prime objective

    The clinical study of vaginal birth after caesarean section

    Background: VBAC has reduced the rate of repeat caesarean section in modern medicine. VBAC-TOL is successful in 60-80% of acceptable candidates if applied to all patients presenting with prior caesarean procedure (8.2-8.5%), there is potential to increase the overall vaginal delivery rate by 5%. Though the safety of VBAC in carefully selected patients have been demonstrated in several studies, controversy continues over when to advise patients who had caesarean section to undergo TOL. The purpose of current study was to know the success of VBAC, to know the maternal morbidity and mortality and foetal outcome in VBAC group.Methods: It was a prospective study performed on women with one previous LSCS admitted to tertiary care hospital for a period of one year from August 2018 to August 2019 at DM Waynad institute of medical sciences, Waynad.Results: In the present study 292 women with one previous LSCS were selected, among them 32 women had elective LSCS for various indications, 260 women underwent TOL. Among 260 women, 152 women achieved VBAC (58.46%) and 108 women underwent LSCS following failed TOL. Maternal morbidity was 9.61%. The incidence of scar dehiscence was 2.69% and uterine rupture was 0.38%. There was no maternal and foetal mortality in this study. NICU admission was 4.6%.Conclusions: Trial of labour should be encouraged in women with one previous LSCS with no obstetric complications

    A method and apparatus for faster, reliable and consolidated logging of information during system failure

    For servers today, that run mission critical workloads, downtime is not an option and any outage of these servers usually translates to reduced revenue, reduced profitability and potential customer loss. Any interruption in the operation or availability of these workloads will have a ripple effect throughout the organization. Gathering valid and necessary data about the event of failure from all possible sources plays a significant role in determining how quickly and accurately the root cause for the server down-time is identified. The data required for such analysis is spread across Firmware and Operating System (OS) and comes from different sources on the server. This information comprises of data collected and logged by the firmware such as the error log buffers, event logs and also the state of the system at the time of failure, collected by the operating systems in the core dump files. Most often the challenge faced is with collection of the set of interdependent information originating and stored at different locations on the system. The proposed solution enables a high availability design by eliminating single point of failure during the log collection and retrieval process. This disclosure proposes a method and apparatus for faster, reliable and consolidated logging of necessary data from different sources on occurrence of a system failure

    2,7-dichlorofluorescein hydrazide as a new fluorescent probe for mercury quantification: Application to industrial effluents and polluted water samples

    A new fluorescent probe 2,7-dichlorofluorescein hydrazide for mercury quantification in aqueous medium has been described. It is based on the spirolactam ring opening of colorless and nonfluorescent 2,7-dichlorofluorescein hydrazide induced by Hg2+ ions through the hydrolytic cleavage of amide bond to produce green-colored highly fluorescent dichlorofluorescein in alkaline medium. The significant color change of this reagent in the presence of mercury ions can be used as a sensitive naked-eye detector. The working range, limit of detection, and relative standard deviations were found to be 0.2-20 ngmL-1, 0.042 ngmL-1, and 0.69 respectively. The proposed method is free from most of the common interfering ions present in the environmental samples. The developed method has been successfully applied to determine trace level mercury from water, soil, and industrial effluents. © 2013 Sureshkumar Kempahanumakkagari et al

    Parental combining ability as a good predictor of productive crosses in sweet sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench]

    The exploitation of heterosis through the development and deployment of hybrids for commercial cultivation is one of the effective approaches for genetic enhancement of crop plants for traits of economic importance. Developing an objective criterion of choosing the parents for developing and testing hybrids is essential for maximizing the success of heterosis breeding. A set of 18 crosses produced from parents differing in their gca effects for bio-energy traits such as millable cane yield, juice volume and juice sugar content (as indicated by Brix %) were evaluated in replicated trial in the experimental plots of the Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore during 2006-07. The utility of parental general combining ability for producing high frequency of superior crosses for a set of bio-energy traits in sweet sorghum was investigated. The study suggested that parents with contrasting gca effects produce crosses with higher sca and heterotic potential for the bio-energy traits. The use of female parents with higher gca effects is important for realizing greater probability of crosses with sca effects and heterosis in desirable direction for bio-energy traits

    Straminipile genus Phytophthora cause significant disease losses to global cocoa production. Phytopthtora palmivora is one of the major constraints in cocoa production causes significant pod losses. P. palmivora has a complex disease cycle involving several sources of primary inoculum and several modes of dissemination of secondary inoculum. This results in explosive epidemics during favorable environmental conditions. Highest severity of Seedling blight was observed in raised bed nurseries as compared to poly bag nurseries in Shivamogga district (59.26%) followed by Chikkamagluru (53.85%) of the state Karnataka , respectively. Further, the highest incidence of 72.00, 70.83 and 70.00% of black pod rot disease was recorded in Udupi, Dakshina Kannada and Shivamogga district followed by Chikkamagaluru (65.22%), Kodagu (64.00%) and Davanagere (55.56%) district respectively. Due to continuous rain fall or high moisture conditions and the crop was grown as intercrop with arecanut is vulnerable for the attack of pathogen due to the presence of pathogenic variability
